Going bonkers in Busan
Train to Busan manages to make all the tired tropes of the zombie movie seem new again and features natural performances that create characters whose fates the audience is invested in. The zombies are great too – their foggy eyes are the icing on the terrifying cake.
The best B-movies use genre to explore social issues, and I appreciated the way Train to Busan tackled class issues throughout – I’d really like to see somebody more knowledgeable than I do a Marxian analysis of the film. The rich characters take advantage of the middle and lower class characters – the rich survive for most of the film because of the kindness, the pure looking-out-for-others mindset of the poorer characters, but the upper class’s greed leads to their destruction like a snake swallowing its own tail.
The end of the film was surprisingly poignant and I am excited for the sequel, Peninsula
