Ode to serialized adventures comes to life with sometimes daring, sometimes dated special effects
A comic book come to life, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow reminded me of the old serialized movies like Fantomas or Judex (the latter made as a tribute to the former) – films that feature absolutely delightful and nonsensical plots that move heroic characters that the viewer comes to love through exciting environments and into opposition with shadowy and mysterious arch-nemeses.
Sky Captain asks the viewer to buy into crazy plot developments, but if they do believe in the story, then the film becomes a fairly rewarding action adventure. The chemistry between Law and Paltrow is a bit off (odd considering how good they were in The Talented Mr. Ripley) but they come together in their respective performances by the end. Angelina Jolie is fantastic in the film – just the right amount of intrigue that interests the viewer, then she goes and does some serious butt-kicking.
I loved the look of the film, with its soft-focus, sepia tinted cities and shadowy villain’s lairs. Watching the film reminded me of looking at comic-books from the Golden Age – if only the CGI could be updated!
