Del Toro swings mightily and misses
Most of Del Toro’s work haunts me in some way (the endings of Pan’s Labyrinth or Shape of Water come to mind, or the little emerging from the basement pool in The Devil’s Backbone) and yet I don’t think Crimson Peak will, which is odd because it’s more explicitly horror themed, inspired by some of my favorite films in the genre, such as The Innocents, The Haunting, and The Shining. The production is incredible, with no detail left overlooked, and yet the characters and story left me wanting for more atmosphere and existential ennui
I do look forward, however, to a Crimson Peak / Twin Peaks crossover
